About Shopify
Opportunity is not evenly distributed. Shopify puts independence within reach for anyone with a dream to start a business. We propel entrepreneurs and enterprises to scale the heights of their potential. Since 2006, we’ve grown to over 8,300 employees and generated over $1 trillion in sales for millions of merchants in 175 countries.
This is life-defining work that directly impacts people’s lives as much as it transforms your own. This is putting the power of the few in the hands of the many, is a future with more voices rather than fewer, and is creating more choices instead of an elite option.
About you
Moving at our pace brings a lot of change, complexity, and ambiguity—and a little bit of chaos. Shopifolk thrive on that and are comfortable being uncomfortable. That means Shopify is not the right place for everyone.
Before you apply, consider if you can:
- Care deeply about what you do and about making commerce better for everyone
- Excel by seeking professional and personal hypergrowth
- Keep up with an unrelenting pace (the week, not the quarter)
- Be resilient and resourceful in face of ambiguity and thrive on (rather than endure) change
- Bring critical thought and opinion
- Embrace differences and disagreement to get shit done and move forward
- Work digital-first for your daily work
About the role
Engineers come to Shopify to do their life’s work and build products and infrastructure to power global commerce. Engineers at Shopify are apprentices in computer programming. They work on their craft excellence. They are generalists. They have opportunities to learn new things, and provide mentorship along the way.
Shopify engineers contribute to the entire commerce stack. The best buying experience on the planet, never-before-imagined finance products, contributions to open source, best-in-class developer experience tools, and more.
Why you’ll love working at Shopify
- Biggest Rails shop in the world. Love Rails? You get to see how Shopify handles the largest Rails app in the world. And make it better.
- Help merchants succeed at the infinite game of entrepreneurship and commerce. At Shopify you’ll help make the pie bigger, not just take a piece of it.
- Product-driven culture. Our top priority is building the best product to make commerce better for everyone. You’ll make stuff that really helps people, over and over again.
- Remote-first. Remote “friendly” isn’t good enough for us – we’re remote-by-default. You’ll set the trend in building the highest functioning remote teams on Earth.
- Curiosity and questioning is expected. You are encouraged to seek out new information and learn about areas outside of your domain to broaden your knowledge. Direct feedback and questions are always welcome.
- Our CEO is engaged. You’ll hear from our CEO, Tobi, regularly. He sets the direction, learns by coding and is deeply passionate about our product and mission.
- Craft has always been the heart of Shopify. Crafters are passionate about getting shit done, honing their skills via project contributions, and executing on specific areas of the business or product.
- People leaders are stewards of the organization. For Managers, they are stewards of the craft and have always been individual crafters first. They will start as crafters first and then make the majority of their impact by assembling, leading, and aiming a team of crafters to achieve Shopify’s mission.
Sound good? We’d love to hear from you. Our application includes information outside of your resume to help us understand where your breadth and depth of experience lie. Once you submit your interest, our recruitment team will review your application and get back to you within 10 days regardless of the outcome. We’re looking forward to hearing from you!
